From mid-June to mid-July, the ISWP Summer Institute (ENG 409.06) brings together teachers from across central Illinois. Together, we read, write, and discuss key questions, challenges, and opportunities associated with our teaching of writing. In addition to experiencing the writing process firsthand and investigating questions essential to our teaching practice, we consider a topical focus that typically supports the development of ISWP programming. In 2013, a focus on the design and launch of student-staffed writing centers led to the creation of the ISWP Writing Centers Network, a consortium led by ISWP Teacher Consultants who continue to launch and administer centers in their schools. In 2016, we look forward to a topical focus on genre studies, thinking specifically about how we can assist our students to develop knowledge and awareness of in-school and real-world genres.
